In 2020, the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam (IP Viet Nam) received 1344 appeal requests (an increase of 54% compared to 2019) and settled 926 appeal requests (up 3.6% compared to 2019).

In 2020, IP Viet Nam received 1344 appeal requests (an increase of 54% compared to 2019), including 23 appeal requests on patents, 03 on utility solutions, 31 on industrial designs, 1281 on national trademarks and 06 on international trademarks. IP Viet Nam issued 1154 notices of acceptance (up 70% compared to 2019).
Accordingly, IP Viet Nam handled 926 appeal requests (an increase of 3.6% compared to 2019), including 43 appeal requests on patents, 7 on utility solutions, 8 on industrial designs, 752 on national trademarks and 116 on international trademarks.
Besides, IP Viet Nam received 430 requests for termination and invalidation of 441 protection titles (up 1.2% compared to 2019) and settled 106 requests (down 48.8% compared to 2019).
Following the second-complaint settlement process, the Ministry of Science and Technology held dialogues with applicants. IP Viet Nam’s representatives attended dialogues, organized by the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Science and Technology, concerning to 24 cases on establishment procedures of IPRs in which there were many complicated ones regarding such patents as: “method on temporary change of giant freshwater prawn’s gender”, “one-column transformer station”, “waste smoke treatment system of crematorium”, industrial design “utility trench”, trademark of Hyundai Aluminum Vina Joint Stock Company, trademark “Cu đơ Thư Viện”, trademark “kita’s”, trademark “PMA”, trademark of Ajinomoto Company, trademark “Đất Xanh”, trademark “Trung Nguyen”, trademark “G7”, etc.
For enforcement activities, IP Viet Nam received and processed the written request for professional opinions from intellectual property rights enforcement agencies, namely the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Viet Nam Market Surveillance, the Economic Police and the Customs with a total of 184 cases (patent: 04 cases; industrial designs: 02 cases; trademark: 178 cases).
IP Viet Nam’s representatives attended meetings organized by the Anti-Counterfeiting Association, the Consumer Protection Association and Vietnam Directorate of Market Surveillance and worked with enforcement agencies (the Customs, the Inspectorate of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Market Surveillance and the Economic Police) to provide information and present opinions to ensure IPRs enforcement activities.
Representatives of IP Viet Nam participated in 04 administrative lawsuits in courts, provided courts with 24 professional comments, attended 08 hearing or conciliation sessions with applicants, related third-party or related party concerning the administrative decisions issued by IP Viet Nam at Hanoi People’s Court.

In addition, IP Viet Nam sent lecturers to some classes on IPRs enforcement organized by the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department – General Department of Vietnam Customs, Departments of Science and Technology of Bac Giang, Bac Ninh provinces and Hai Phong city, Vietnam Association for Anti-counterfeiting and Trademark Protection, Thai Nguyen University, etc.
